Our Family Heritage

Over 133 years ago Henry J. Schellhaas settled on the North Side of Pittsburgh. He had a strong desire and commitment to help families who had lost a loved one. In 1868 the first Schellhaas Funeral Home was started on the North Side on Cedar Avenue. In the late 1800's Henry's son, Henry J. Schellhaas II, moved to East Ohio Street where he had a store front for, at that time, all viewings were held in the families' homes. As times changed and transition was made from visitation in the family's private residence to the funeral home, Henry moved to our larger location at 707 East Street. His son, Henry J. Schellhaas III, fondly known as Harry, doubled the size of our present North Side facility as it is today.

With his untimely passing during World War II, his wife, Mary R. Schellhaas and their three sons, Henry J., IV, Charles O. and Robert D. Schellhaas, Sr., carried on the tradition and opened a second location in West View at 388 Center Avenue. Over the past 50 years the West View home has undergone dramatic renovation and remodeling as it stands today.

Since 1951 Henry J. Schellhaas IV (Jack) has resided in Richland Township and in 1971 opened Schellhaas Funeral Home Ltd. in Bakerstown, In 1990 the Richland facility underwent a major renovation that tripled it's visitation capabilities.

Currently active in the Schellhaas tradition is forth generation funeral director, Henry J. Schellhaas IV (Jack), fifth generation funeral directors Charles A. Schellhaas (Chuck, son of Charles O. Schellhaas) and Robert D. Schellhaas Jr. (Rob, son of Robert D. Schellhaas Sr.), and sixth generation funeral director C. Matthew Schellhaas ( Matt, son of Charles A. Schellhaas).

In Fall 2003, Schellhaas Funeral Home was recently mentioned and included in the critically acclaimed play “The Chief” depicting the life and legacy of Pittsburgh’s beloved Art Rooney Sr.

We at the Schellhaas Funeral Home feel that it is important to put your trust in the hands of someone who has a direct interest in the Funeral Home itself. A family owned and operated funeral home has your best interests in mind because you have their future in your hands.

At this time we would like to thank those many families who have entrusted their confidence in us. Over the past century, funeral traditions have changed drastically and we have grown and changed with the times. However, our commitment to personalized service and traditional value is unwavering.

One thing has not changed. We were, still are and always will be:
"A FAMILY DEDICATED TO SERVICE SINCE 1868"
